Greene County Daily World: Third annual RFOF to take place Saturday

June 12, 2016

Via Greene County Daily World The third annual Running for our Future 5K will be held on Saturday, June 11. According to a press release, the race is projected to raise thousands of dollars for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) scholarships. The 5K is held in honor of the late Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division Commander Chuck LaSota, who 'was instrumental in furthering STEM education in the communities surrounding the NSWC.' LaSota also helped advance the growth of WestGate Academy Conferencing and Training Center, WestGate@Crane Technology Park and Battery Innovation Center. According to Teresea LaSota, Chuck dedicated his life to giving back to the community and to STEM education. 'If we were going to stay a world leader we have to have young people going into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,' she said. 'It is critical to go forward and remain strong.' The purpose of the race is to raise money and awareness for STEM education, regional STEM opportunities, and careers. RFOF is a 3.1-mile course that starts at WestGate Academy, goes through WestGate@Crane Technology Park, and turns around at the Battery Innovation Center. All proceeds from the race go toward STEM focused scholarships that will be given away at the WestGate@Crane College Fair October 3, 2016. Last year, $3,000 of scholarship money was awarded to winning students. Online registration will be available through Friday evening at http://bit.ly/RFOF5K2016. Race day registration will start at 8 a.m. The 5K starts at 9 a.m. Satruday and runners will be timed.
