New housing project hopes to attract tech workers

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. - Responding to a growing need for affordable and contemporary housing near Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, developers and economic development on Friday celebrated the opening of Westcott, a new housing development in the WestGate@Crane Technology Park. It was specifically designed to attract, retain and cater to professionals in high-tech fields who work at NSWC-Crane, the Westgate technology park, and the high-tech Battery Innovation Center. “It is the first housing development to be built in the tech park, and its ‘housing that works’ brand reflects its unique attributes that will serve the area’s workforce,” said Greene County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Brianne Jerrels. The developer is Bloomington-based Wininger Construction that will offer three types of townhome and paired-style (duplex) home plans. The builder partnered with Ellettsville-based Smithville Fiber that will offer not only high-speed fiber broadband, but a variety of “smart home” options. “These new Westcott paired homes include the attributes that a professional technology workforce needs and desires, including the capacity of high-speed broadband that allows professionals to work remotely,” said John Mensch, president of the WestGate Authority and the Greene County Redevelopment Commission. The development has 60 lots. Home prices for the Wescott development will range from $230,000-$300,000. “By designing specifically for first-time buyers, we were able to create homes that are affordable, but fulfill the needs of technology and related professionals in the area’s workforce,” said Tom Wininger, chief executive officer of Wininger Construction. The developer says this project intends to draw young professionals who are interested in buying their first house and need modern amenities to work from home. Jerrels says the new development will help ramp up potential interest for developers of retail and restaurants.
